Travelers arriving at Athens International Airport on Thursday will face disruptions, as no taxis will be available from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. due to a three-hour strike announced by the Attica Taxi Drivers Union (SATA).
The union is protesting a recent decision to permit the operation of an Uber stand nex to the existing taxi station, which SATA has denounced as being “illegal”.
“Our positions are clear and non-negotiable. We will not surrender transportation work that rightfully belongs to taxi drivers, nor will we compromise our professional status,” SATA said in a statement posted on its website.
The Union said that it would remain open to dialogue and seek to meet with Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis. SATA warned however that if no resolution was reached, further protest actions may follow.
“We demand equality and humane working conditions,” the union said.
The disruption comes as Greece enters the tourism season, with thousands of travelers relying on taxi services to and from Athens International Airport.
Last week, a proposal by Minister Kyranakis to lower weekend taxi fares prompted a strong reaction from SATA, which warned of a 48-hour strike in response.
