A police officer was found dead inside his patrol car shortly before midnight in Agios Dimitrios, a southern suburb of Athens. The 37-year-old had been reported missing by his wife, who contacted the Acropolis Crime Investigation and Detection Department on Monday evening.
An alert was immediately issued, and Hellenic Police located the 37-year-old’s patrol car. According to initial information, the officer had marks on his neck and hands. A medical examiner and officers from several police units, including the Security Police and Greece’s so-called “FBI,” the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, were called to the scene.
Investigations by all the units involved were completed shortly before 4 a.m. A police tow truck subsequently removed the vehicle from the scene.
Initial Findings in the Investigation
The 37-year-old officer’s cellphone was switched on, which helped authorities locate him. In addition to the marks found on his neck and hands, investigators are examining another element of the case.
The patrol car was locked from the inside. Police are investigating all possibilities as they work to determine the circumstances surrounding the 37-year-old’s death.
