Greek Police on Thursday afternoon prohibited a planned outdoor rally in Syntagma square by pro-Palestinian groups on the occasion of the one-year anniversary of the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
The decision also covered several blocks around the specific square, in the heart of downtown Athens and in front of Parliament.
The specific groups had previously printed posters to promote the rally, featuring a likeness of the Hamas militant. The latter was shot in the head during a clash with an Israeli army patrol in southern Gaza.
According to the police announcement, “the aforementioned prohibition is imposed because the holding these assemblies poses a serious threat to public safety, due to the possible commission of serious crimes, in particular against life, physical integrity, and property.”
Sinwar, fourth chairman of the Hamas political bureau and its second leader in the Gaza Strip, was considered as the “architect” of the terrorist assault in southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.
