Prominent Greek criminal defense attorney Stavros Georgiou was found dead Tuesday night (July 21) in his law office on 3rd September Street in central Athens.

According to police sources, Georgiou was discovered by his daughters at his office, located at 158 3rd September Street. A large police presence was dispatched to the scene after authorities found him in the fetal position. The same sources said there are indications that the death may have resulted from criminal activity.

The office showed no signs of being ransacked. However, according to police sources, the attorney is believed to have been dead for several hours, possibly since Tuesday morning or even the previous night.

A forensic pathologist is expected to examine the body before it is moved in order to determine whether Georgiou sustained any injuries and, if so, where they are located. Dried blood was found around the body, which authorities said may have been affected by the high temperatures.
