Five whales were spotted in the Ionian Sea, south of Lefkada and en route to Paxos, offering a rare and spectacular sight to those in the area. In a video circulating on social media, the large marine mammals can be seen swimming in close proximity to one another and repeatedly surfacing above the water.
Particular attention has been drawn to the sounds the whales appear to be making. According to experts, these vocalizations are likely linked to communication between the animals, a key aspect of whale social behavior.
The Ionian Sea is considered one of the Mediterranean’s most important habitats for cetaceans. Occasional sightings of whales and dolphins are recorded each year, underscoring both the region’s rich biodiversity and its vital role in supporting marine life.
