A sudden, sharp pain in the foot while swimming in the sea may be caused by contact with the venomous spines of a scorpionfish or weever fish, two species found in Mediterranean waters.
Their stings can cause intense pain, swelling and skin irritation. While most cases are not life-threatening, immediate care is recommended, including cleaning the wound and providing first aid.
The pain comes from their hard spines, while the irritation is caused by the venom they release. Medical assistance is advised if symptoms are severe or if the wound is deep.
Where scorpionfish are found
Scorpionfish live close to the seabed, usually among rocks, in crevices or in areas with seaweed. They are well camouflaged and often remain completely still in rocky or mixed coastal seabeds.
Because they are difficult to spot, many injuries happen when swimmers touch rocks, move through areas with stones, or handle freshly caught fish.
Scorpionfish have a compact body, a large head and many spiny fins. They are also known for their distinctive reddish color and their numerous sharp spines.
Where weever fish are found
Weever fish are commonly found in both shallow and deeper waters. They prefer sandy, muddy or gravel seabeds, where they can hide beneath the surface with only their eyes and dorsal fin visible.
Their appearance helps them blend into the sand. They usually have a dark yellowish and grey color on their upper body, with a lighter underside.
Because they often remain hidden in shallow waters, they can pose a risk to swimmers and children walking in the sea, especially during the summer months.
First aid after a sting
For a scorpionfish sting, treatment may include the use of a potassium permanganate dressing, which is reported to help neutralize the venom.
For a weever fish sting, recommendations include rinsing the affected area with cold water or placing the area in warm water, which can help break down the venom.
In all cases, proper wound cleaning and monitoring of symptoms are important, with medical help recommended when needed.
