Strong southerly winds sweeping across eastern Crete on Wednesday, March 12, have disrupted scheduled flights to and from Heraklion Airport.
So far, two flights from Athens to Heraklion have been canceled, along with two return flights from Heraklion to Athens. Additionally, two flights from Heraklion to Thessaloniki have also been called off.
According to Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY), the wind intensity remains high, reaching up to 7 on the Beaufort scale, with no immediate signs of weakening.
Meanwhile, the powerful gusts have caused damage in the city port of Heraklion, with authorities reporting of an incident of a worn-out streetlight pole collapsing onto the coastal avenue between Pankritio Stadium and the Giofyro interchange. Fortunately, no accidents or injuries were reported.
In response to the extreme weather conditions, the Civil Protection Agency has announced a ban on burning branches until next Tuesday. Authorities also warn of unseasonably high temperatures expected over the weekend, with forecasts predicting highs of up to 30°C.
As for ferry schedules, no changes have been announced for routes to and from Heraklion Port, according to the local port authority, despite storm warnings indicating southerly winds reaching 6 to 7 on the Beaufort scale.
