The Thessaloniki Metro has resumed full operation after an unexpected technical issue forced an eight-hour suspension of service on Tuesday, June 25. Trains are now running normally along the entirety of Line 1, according to an official statement from the operating company, THEMA.
The disruption began early in the morning at 6:00 AM local time, when a malfunction occurred in the communication system between the metro’s zone controllers and the Automated Train Supervision (ATS) system, which is responsible for monitoring and controlling train movements.

In a public update during the outage, THEMA announced:
“We inform you that due to a technical issue currently under resolution, Thessaloniki Metro services have been suspended along the entire length of the line. Service will resume once the issue is resolved, and a further announcement will be made.”
The breakdown impacted passengers across the city, as the entire metro network came to a standstill during peak commuting hours. Technicians worked throughout the day to resolve the issue, restoring operations by the afternoon.
This marks the second such incident in recent days. On Saturday, June 21, a similar technical fault temporarily halted service on both metro lines for approximately 40 minutes, beginning at around 2:10 PM.
While Tuesday’s interruption was more prolonged, authorities assured the public that necessary steps are being taken to prevent further disruptions.
