The Thessaloniki Metro is expected to temporarily halt operations for approximately 15 days in late May, as part of ongoing works to fully integrate the extension դեպի Kalamaria into the network.
According to Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Nikos Tachiaos, who spoke to Radio Thessaloniki, the suspension is deemed necessary to carry out trial runs linking the new Kalamaria line with the system’s main line.
In the next phase, new trainsets designated for the extension will be introduced into the network. These trains will bear distinct names—such as “MIKRA”—and will operate passenger services along the main line up to the Martiou station.
Beyond Martiou, they will continue without passengers as part of testing procedures. Commuters traveling toward Nea Elvetia will need to transfer to the next available train on the main line.
Tachiaos also ruled out extending metro operating hours beyond 23:00, emphasizing that nighttime periods are essential for continued system testing.
Finally, he clarified that ongoing works on Pontou Street do not affect the progress or operation of the Kalamaria extension.
