Thousands of Greeks left the country’s urban centers for the long weekend holiday of the Holy Spirit. Heavy traffic was observed at the ports of Attica on Saturday, as thousands of Athenians left the city to take advantage of the sunny weather for a short getaway.
The largest wave of departures occurred yesterday, Friday, June 6, when over 20,000 passengers departed from the Port of Piraeus, along with more than 10,000 heading to the Saronic Islands. Passengers continued to arrive at the ports of Piraeus, Rafina, and Lavrio, with most travelers heading to the Cyclades and Saronic islands. The Hellenic Coast Guard has implemented all necessary measures to facilitate the flow of holidaymakers.
According to ferry companies, vessel occupancy—especially on routes to the Cyclades—is high. For today, 20 ferry departures are scheduled from the Port of Piraeus, with an expected 13,810 passengers.
For the Saronic Gulf islands, 45 departures are planned (26 high-speed and 19 conventional vessels), with 7,267 passengers expected to depart (3,002 by high-speed ferry and 4,625 by conventional).
From the Port of Rafina, 12 departures are scheduled, serving an estimated 7,625 passengers, while from Lavrio, 9 departures are planned with approximately 3,217 passengers expected to set sail.
In Thessaloniki, the exodus has also been underway without a hitch since the morning. The majority of those leaving the city for the long weekend are heading to Halkidiki, seeking a refreshing escape on its beautiful beaches.
