A series of earthquakes recorded in and around the island of Santorini in the Aegean Sea over the past few days were reported on Monday. The strongest one initially reported as 5.1 but later revised to 4.9 by the Geodynamic Institute, occurred 19 kilometers north-northwest of Anafi. A landslide was recorded at Caldera, the large, water-filled volcanic crater, as the earth was “rumbling”.

The 4.3 tremor struck at approximately 1:20 p.m., 231 kilometers southeast of Athens, with its epicenter located 19 kilometers south-southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos, according to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens. This was followed by a 4.6-magnitude tremor at 1:50 p.m., 233 kilometers southeast of Athens, with an epicenter 16 kilometers south-southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos.

Greek authorities with the aid of experts and seismologists are continuously monitoring the situation in the wider area, assessing the dangers of the seismic activity which has intensified in volume surrounding areas of the Aegean Island.

A 112 emergency alert has warned Santorini residents about the risk of landslides. It emphasizes that access to the beaches of Ammoudi, Armeni, and the Old Port of Fira is prohibited.

A second 112 alert was issued shortly before 1:00 p.m., warning of prolonged seismic activity in the wider region of Ios, Amorgos, Thira, and Anafi as authorities urged citizens to remain alert and follow their instructions.

Meanwhile, Greece’s major Airline AEGEAN announced the addition of two extra flights for Monday, February 3 and one additional flight for tomorrow, February 4, to and from the Santorini, as reoccurring seismic activity in the Aegean continues to shake the island.

The addition of the extra flights followed a request from the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. The aim of the additional flights is to facilitate the movement of residents and visitors who wish to leave the island. The company noted that all four regular, scheduled daily flights to and from Santorini will operate as usual according to schedule.
