Greece is set to experience a temporary return to unsettled weather, with Thursday marked by rain, thunderstorms in some areas, and a drop in temperatures below seasonal norms, according to the latest forecast. Conditions are expected to gradually improve from Friday onwards, with a return to more stable and warmer weather by the weekend.
Unsettled Conditions Across the Country on Thursday
Weather conditions will deteriorate across much of the country, with cloud cover increasing and localized rain showers expected in many regions. Isolated thunderstorms may also occur, particularly in the afternoon hours.
Northern and western parts of the country, including mountainous areas, are expected to see scattered showers developing after initially lighter cloud cover. Elsewhere, more widespread rainfall and intermittent storm activity are forecast throughout the day.
By the afternoon and evening, conditions are expected to gradually improve in northern and central areas, although rain may persist in parts of the south, including coastal and island regions.
Light snowfall is also expected in higher elevations in northern and central mountainous areas, reflecting the sharp drop in temperatures.
Strong Winds and Below-Average Temperatures
Winds will generally blow from northern directions, ranging between moderate and strong levels, and locally reaching higher intensities at times before easing overnight.
Temperatures will fall noticeably, with northern and central mainland areas as well as several island regions experiencing values below seasonal averages. Daytime highs are expected to remain in the mid-teens in many inland and northern areas, while slightly warmer conditions will be recorded in southern regions.
Weather in Athens and Thessaloniki
In Athens, cloud cover will increase with periods of rain expected mainly during the morning and early afternoon. Winds will be strong at times, and temperatures will remain cool for the season.
In Thessaloniki, northern Greece’s largest city, rain and possible isolated thunderstorms are forecast, with improvement expected later in the day as conditions begin to stabilize.
Gradual Improvement from Friday
From Friday, April 24, weather conditions are expected to improve significantly across most of Greece, with sunshine returning to many regions.
However, some southern and island areas, including Crete and parts of the southeastern Aegean, may continue to see occasional clouds and localised showers, with a small chance of thunderstorms in some locations.
Temperatures will begin to recover slightly, reaching more typical spring levels in most areas.
Weekend Outlook: More Stable Conditions
On Saturday, the weather is expected to be largely stable across much of the country, with long periods of sunshine dominating in many regions. Some cloud cover and isolated showers may still occur in southern island areas and mountainous parts of the mainland during the afternoon.
Winds will remain from the north but are expected to gradually weaken, while temperatures will continue a mild upward trend, bringing more comfortable spring conditions across Greece as the weekend progresses.
