A wildfire erupted on Thursday afternoon, July 3, in the area of Titan near the town of Elefsina, located west of Athens. The blaze is affecting a forested region and has prompted a rapid and coordinated response from Greek firefighting authorities.
Authorities were immediately placed on alert following the outbreak of the fire. According to an official statement from the Hellenic Fire Service, a total of 38 firefighters have been deployed to the scene. They are supported by two specialized ground teams from the 1st Special Forest Operations Unit (EMODE), as well as nine fire engines.
To assist in the effort, two firefighting helicopters have also been mobilized, providing crucial aerial support in containing the flames. Local government water trucks (OTA) are contributing additional resources to the operation.
Conditions and Regional Context
The fire in Elefsina comes at a time of heightened wildfire activity across the country, with another major blaze currently burning in the Ierapetra region on the island of Crete. There, too, significant firefighting resources have been committed in an effort to gain control over the flames.
The precise cause of the fire in Elefsina has not been disclosed, and no evacuation orders have been reported as of now. However, the situation remains under close monitoring.
High Fire Risk Season
Greece is entering the peak of its wildfire season, during which hot, dry, and windy conditions often contribute to rapid fire spread. Local authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any signs of fire immediately.
