Greek authorities have issued warnings over increased wildfire risks expected across several parts of the country on Saturday, July 5. The warning comes amid rising summer temperatures and heightened concerns over fire-prone conditions.
High Alert in Key Regions
According to the official fire risk forecast released by the national fire service, a very high wildfire risk (Level 4) is expected in the following areas:
- Attica, the region surrounding Athens
- Southern Evia, an island located northeast of the capital
In addition, a high fire risk (Level 3) has been forecast for several other parts of the country.
Public Urged to Follow Safety Measures
Greece’s Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection has issued detailed safety guidelines for residents, particularly those living near forested or rural areas. Citizens are advised to take the following measures if a wildfire approaches:
- Stay calm and alert
- Remove all flammable materials from around the property and store them in secure, enclosed areas
- Seal off all openings in the home including chimneys, windows, and doors to prevent embers from entering
- Shut off gas and fuel supplies both inside and outside the home
- Retract awnings from balconies and windows
- Leave garden gates open to allow access for firefighting crews
- Place a ladder outside the home, on the side opposite the fire, to allow roof access if needed
- Connect garden hoses and lay them out to cover the home’s perimeter
- If visibility is low due to smoke, turn on indoor and outdoor lights to improve visibility
After the Fire Passes
Once the fire has passed, residents should:
- Exit the home cautiously and extinguish any small remaining fires immediately
- Monitor the perimeter and outdoor areas of the property for at least 48 hours to check for possible flare-ups
If the Fire Reaches Your Home
Authorities warn that staying indoors may be safer than attempting to flee if escape routes are not fully secure. The public is reminded not to seek shelter in a car, as survival chances are significantly higher in a well-built home.
If sheltering in the home:
- Tightly close all doors and windows
- Block gaps with wet cloths to keep out smoke
- Remove curtains and move furniture away from doors and windows
- Close all interior doors to slow the spread of fire
- Fill bathtubs, sinks, and buckets with water as a backup supply
- Stay together in one room
- Keep a flashlight and spare batteries in case of power outage
Residents of wooden homes are advised to seek shelter in nearby concrete or brick buildings.
If an evacuation is ordered, citizens must strictly follow official instructions and only use designated evacuation routes provided by authorities.
