Μake us preferred on Google A woman was killed shortly after midnight on Saturday, August 1, after being struck by a suburban railway train in the town of Megara, west of Athens.
According to Hellenic Train, the train was operating a non-passenger service from Kiato to Rentis when the accident occurred.
As the train passed through the Megara station area, the engineer spotted the woman on the tracks and immediately activated the automatic emergency braking system and sounded the train’s warning horn. Despite these efforts, the collision could not be avoided.
Emergency Response
Firefighters, police officers, and emergency medical personnel were dispatched to the scene. Twelve firefighters using four vehicles participated in the operation to recover the woman, who was found unconscious after the impact.
Following the completion of the required procedures by the authorities, the train continued to the Rentis rail depot.
Hellenic Train Statement
In a statement, Hellenic Train said the incident occurred at 12:20 a.m. involving train No. 93321, which was operating an official service route without passengers between Kiato and Rentis.
The company said the engineer followed all required safety procedures by applying the emergency brakes and activating the train’s audible warning signals after detecting a person on the tracks. However, the collision could not be prevented.
Hellenic Train expressed its sorrow over the fatal incident and said it is cooperating with the relevant authorities as they investigate the circumstances and causes of the accident.
