The 53-year-old woman shot by her husband Monday night in an attempted murder suicide is being treated at Athens’ G. Gennimatas Hospital and is reportedly out of danger.

The tragic incident unfolded under circumstances that remain unclear. According to authorities, the 57-year-old man shot his wife in the ground-floor parking of the apartment block where they lived in the Cholargos district.

The woman collapsed to the ground bleeding heavily and began calling for help.

The gunman then returned to the couple’s third-floor apartment and ended his life with a gunshot to the head. Police officers who arrived at the scene applied a tourniquet to the woman’s leg, managing to stop the bleeding before transporting her to hospital.

Inside the apartment, officers found the 57-year-old dead, with the firearm used in the incident lying nearby. According to reports, the couple were involved in sport shooting and legally owned firearms.

Neighbors Describe Scenes of Panic

Residents of the area described moments of terror following the gunshots. One neighbor said: “At around 11 p.m. I heard a loud bang and then screams of ‘help, help,’ followed by a second gunshot.”

Neighbors said the couple had lived in the area for around 25 years without causing problems. However, relatives reportedly told authorities that the man had recently been threatening his wife frequently.

According to the same information, the 57-year-old was a retired pilot, while the 53-year-old woman works as a psychologist at G. Gennimatas Hospital, where she is being treated.
