A 57-year-old man fatally shot himself after injuring his wife during a domestic violence incident Monday night in the upscale east Athens district of Holargos, in the latest incident of domestic violence reported in the country.

Police said the man shot his 53-year-old wife in the leg inside an apartment before turning the weapon on himself.

Neighbors alerted authorities after hearing gunshots and screams coming from the apartment building, prompting a response from police and emergency medical crews.

Paramedics found the woman bleeding and transported her to a nearby hospital for treatment. The man was found dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the head, while the handgun used in the incident was recovered nearby.
