Health authorities on the Greek island of Zakynthos have issued a public health alert following recent cases of leptospirosis, primarily involving people working in agriculture and other outdoor occupations.
The Public Health Directorate of the Zakynthos Regional Unit has released preventive guidance, urging residents—particularly those employed in farming, livestock production, and other outdoor activities—to take enhanced personal protective measures.
Officials said that following basic hygiene practices can significantly reduce the risk of infection and help protect both workers and their families.
Protective Measures Recommended
Authorities are advising extra caution for people who come into contact with soil, animals, waste, sewage systems, or standing water, as well as those working in agricultural and livestock facilities.
They noted that open wounds and cuts can provide an entry point for infection.
Workers are encouraged to wear waterproof gloves, appropriate footwear or rubber boots, and protective clothing while performing outdoor tasks.
Health officials also recommend:
- Covering cuts and open wounds with waterproof dressings.
- Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water after contact with soil, animals, or standing water.
- Cleaning and disinfecting any wounds immediately.
- Avoiding direct contact with standing water.
- Not consuming food that may have come into contact with contaminated water or rodents.
- Washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly before eating and avoiding consumption directly from the field.
Rodent Control Emphasized
The advisory also highlights the importance of limiting rodent populations in homes, businesses, and agricultural facilities.
Residents are urged to store food, animal feed, and agricultural products in secure, enclosed areas, promptly remove garbage and food waste, and implement rodent control measures where necessary.
In addition, pet owners are advised to vaccinate their animals against leptospirosis in consultation with their veterinarians.
“The protection of public and personal health is everyone’s responsibility,” the Public Health Directorate said in its statement.
