Greece got off to a flying start at the World Triathlon Championships (Sept. 23-27) in Spain, capturing two gold medals on the opening day of competition.
Ourania Nomikou and Panagiotis Dimopoulos claimed the top step of the podium in the women’s and men’s 35-39 age groups, respectively, in the sprint event, handing the Greek delegation an impressive start at the year’s premier championship.
Nomikou Takes Gold in 35-39 Category
Nomikou crossed the finish line in 1:12:32 to win the women’s 35-39 division.
She covered the 750-meter swim in 10:56, completed the 20-kilometer bike leg in 35:20, and closed out the 5-kilometer run in 19:50.
Her performance secured the first of Greece’s two gold medals on the day.
Dimopoulos Follows Her to the Top
Shortly afterward, Dimopoulos delivered the Greek team’s second major success.
He finished in 1:00:50 to take gold in the men’s 35-39 category, posting splits of 9:30 in the swim, 29:38 on the bike, and 16:49 on the run. The result earned him first place and completed a Greek double triumph on opening day.
Dimou Just Misses the Podium
Greece’s showing was rounded out by another strong performance.
In the women’s 30-34 category, Elisavet Dimou came within touching distance of a medal, finishing fourth.
She stopped the clock at 1:12:12, missing out on the podium by the narrowest of margins.
