The golden girls of Greece’s national women’s water polo team returned home on Friday after making history in Singapore, where they clinched the gold medal in the World Championship final against Hungary.
The Greek squad touched down at Athens International Airport just before 7 a.m., arriving via Doha. Family, friends, and enthusiastic fans gathered in the arrivals hall to welcome the champions back with open arms and heartfelt applause.
In a thrilling final, Greece overcame Hungary with a score of 12–9, lifting the national flag high and proud atop the podium. The victory marks Greece’s second-ever gold medal in a World Championship, following the team’s first historic win in Shanghai in 2011.

This latest triumph further cements Greece’s enduring status as a powerhouse in international women’s water polo.
“The joy is indescribable — I feel euphoric. This is just the beginning,” said Eleftheria Plevritou, radiating pride and optimism. “We’ve felt so much support from the people, and it’s important that athletes are remembered even when there aren’t such major victories. We are at the top of the world — our team has achieved something monumental,” she added.

Stefania Santa echoed the sentiment: “The emotions are overwhelming. It hasn’t fully sunk in yet. Our years of hard work have finally been rewarded.” Looking ahead, she added, “From the very next day, a new goal is set. We’re focused on what lies ahead.”
Greece’s latest gold in Singapore stands as a testament to the team’s dedication, talent, and the country’s continued excellence on the world water polo stage.
