As a frontrunner in accessibility and sustainable tourism practices, the Municipality of Skiathos will be hosting the Aegean Forum on Saturday, June 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the City Council Hall on the Bourtzi peninsula.
The event brings together leading tourism stakeholders, academics, and local government representatives to explore how islands such as Skiathos can develop a resilient tourism model that prioritizes accessibility, environmental protection, cultural heritage, and an enhanced visitor experience.

Key priorities recently outlined by Skiathos Mayor Thodoris Tzoumas include extending the tourism season, upgrading infrastructure, and securing participation in European Union funding programs aimed at strengthening the resilience and sustainability of the destination through targeted policies and strategic planning.
The forum, titled “Sustainable Tourism and Development in the Sporades Islands: Challenges for the Future,” is organized by the Municipality of Skiathos in collaboration with the Union of Young Local Authorities of Greece (E.N.A.). Discussions will focus on strategic initiatives and actions designed to strengthen sustainability and protect the natural wealth of the Sporades islands, while supporting balanced tourism development amid the evolving challenges facing the global tourism industry.
The event’s keynote speaker is Angela Gerekou, former President of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO).
The Sporades are a group of lush, pine-covered Greek islands in the northwestern Aegean Sea, including Skiathos, Skopelos, Alonissos, and Skyros, known for their beaches, clear waters, and unspoiled natural beauty.
