A funeral is being held today for 21-year-old Nikitas, who was shot dead by a 54-year-old man in Ammoudara, near Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete, in a case that has shocked the country and raised fears of further violence.
The funeral service is scheduled for noon at the Church of Agia Kyriaki in Chonos Mylopotamos, the hometown of the victim’s family. In an emotional social media post, the young man’s sister asked relatives and friends attending the ceremony to wear white clothing as a final tribute.
Greek police are maintaining a strong presence in the area amid concerns that tensions between the two families could escalate. Authorities reportedly fear a new cycle of retaliatory violence due to the long-standing conflict connected to the case.
Police on High Alert
Law enforcement officials have intensified security measures because of the history of disputes between the families involved. According to reports, the victim’s family had allegedly received threats in the past from the suspect.
The 54-year-old man accused of carrying out the shooting remains in custody and faces serious criminal charges. Prosecutors have filed charges of intentional homicide committed in a calm mental state, a charge under Greek law referring to premeditated murder.
The suspect’s 56-year-old wife has also been charged with complicity in the killing through psychological assistance, as investigators say she was present during the attack.
Revenge Motive Investigated
According to the preliminary investigation, authorities believe the killing may have been an act of revenge linked to a fatal traffic accident in 2023 in which the suspect’s 17-year-old son died.
Investigators say the 54-year-old blamed the 21-year-old victim for that earlier tragedy and had allegedly hinted at retaliatory intentions before the shooting.
The two families had reportedly been involved in a lengthy legal dispute, including lawsuits, restraining measures and legal complaints. Despite those measures, the deadly confrontation was not prevented.
Witness Describes Brutal Scene
Local reports revealed disturbing details from a witness statement and security camera footage related to the attack.
According to testimony, the suspect allegedly fired all six bullets from his revolver at the victim before approaching him as he lay injured on the road and kicking him twice in the torso.
The witness described the scene as particularly violent, saying the suspect continued pulling the trigger even after the weapon was empty. The witness also said the kicks appeared to be acts of contempt based on the suspect’s behavior and expression before he fled the scene by car.
