The ongoing war in Iran could push an additional 45 million people into acute hunger by June, the World Food Programme (WFP) said on Tuesday.

Deputy Executive Director Carl Skau said rising food, oil, and shipping costs linked to the conflict are fueling the crisis, potentially driving the total number of people facing severe hunger beyond the current record of 319 million.

“An extra 45 million are projected to be pushed into acute hunger because of rises in food, oil and shipping costs,” Skau told reporters in Geneva.

The warning comes amid intensifying U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran and retaliatory attacks, which have already disrupted key supply chains and further strained global food and energy markets.
