Several people were killed and others injured on Thursday afternoon when a double-decker bus slammed into a bus stop in central Stockholm, according to Swedish police.

The crash occurred at around 15:00 local time (14:00 GMT) on Valhallavägen, a major thoroughfare in the Swedish capital. Emergency services rushed to the scene, where images carried by local media showed rescue crews working to free people trapped beneath the vehicle.

Police spokesperson Nadya Norton confirmed that the bus driver has been arrested and that a manslaughter investigation has been opened — a standard procedure in fatal traffic incidents. Authorities have so far declined to disclose the number of victims or provide details on their identities.

A communications manager for Transdev, the company that operates bus services in northern Stockholm, told national broadcaster SVT that the double-decker involved belonged to its fleet.

A shop owner on Valhallavägen, who witnessed the crash, described seeing the bus strike a pole directly in front of the shelter. “People ran into the shop crying,” they told SVT.

Police presence in the area remains heavy, with additional units arriving throughout the afternoon. Access to a nearby metro station has been cordoned off as investigators continue their work. Norton said officers are examining all possibilities but currently do not believe the incident is linked to terrorism.
