U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle has been asked to resign following mounting allegations of misconduct before and during her tenure in Athens, White House press secretary Katie Zacharia announced on Tuesday.

The decision follows reports of growing dissatisfaction from President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio over allegations involving improper gifts, private travel and attempts to exchange political access for financial benefits.

The move also follows a report by The Wall Street Journal claiming that Guilfoyle had sought $100,000 from a donor to President Donald Trump ahead of her confirmation hearing last year.

“We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well,” Zacharia told reporters during a briefing.

Guilfoyle’s lawyers have denied any wrongdoing, arguing that the money she sought was payment for previously agreed public appearances and speaking engagements. They have also defended her private-plane travel, saying she complied with State Department guidance and regulations.

The State Department’s inspector general is examining the allegations, although it remains unclear whether a formal investigation has been launched. Democratic lawmakers have also called for an inquiry into her conduct.

Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host and California prosecutor, was appointed U.S. ambassador to Greece by Trump.

Further updates are expected as the story develops.
