The Greek Ministry of Culture is moving ahead with the adaptive reuse of two properties, one at Dionysiou Areopagitou Street 18–20 and the redevelopment of the adjacent plot at Vyronos Street 20, creating a unified complex designed to enhance services for visitors to the Acropolis archaeological site. The project aims to combine modern functionality with educational and cultural content, significantly upgrading the overall visitor experience.
Upon completion, both sites will be returned to public use, addressing practical needs of the Acropolis while offering new amenities. The single-story building at Dionysiou Areopagitou 18–20 is arranged in a U-shape around an open courtyard, shaded by a surrounding colonnade that also serves as the main point of access to all enclosed spaces. Inside, the layout features an open-plan area supported by auxiliary facilities, including storage, offices, a first-aid room, and restrooms accessible from the courtyard.

The neighboring plot at Vyronos 20, under the the Ministry’s new plan, will be repurposed, including a cloakroom with self-service lockers, additional sanitary facilities, and a multipurpose space dedicated to educational and cultural activities.
The revamped interior will also accommodate an Hellenic Organization of Cultural Resources (ODAP) shop, while the entrance will feature a security checkpoint for visitors and their belongings. The multipurpose room, located at the rear of the building, will operate independently and take advantage of a roof opening that offers views toward the Acropolis.

A key focus of the project is programming for children up to 12 years old. Creative activities will cater to families wishing to leave younger children in a supervised setting during their visit, as well as to school groups from Greece and abroad. Educational programs will center on archaeology, with particular emphasis on nearby historic sites.
Finally, the Vyronos Street plot will be transformed into an outdoor, flexible-use space with a strong educational and cultural orientation, capable of operating either independently or in direct connection with the Areopagitou building.
