Romania is increasingly becoming a model market for Greek businesses, offering stability and opportunities for firms of all sizes. Over 35 years after the fall of its previous regime, Romania has steadily grown into a reliable partner for Greek investors and exporters. Greek companies operate there across a wide spectrum—from small firms generating €10,000 annually to large enterprises with billions in revenue.

According to the annual report from the Greek Embassy’s Economic and Trade Office in Bucharest, Romania ranked seventh among the top destinations for Greek exports in 2023, maintaining a position in the top ten for five consecutive years. Bilateral trade between the two countries reached €2.936 billion in 2024, up 2.4% from €2.867 billion in 2023. Greece also enjoys a trade surplus in services with Romania, totaling €543 million in 2024.

Greek exports to Romania steadily increased from 2015 to 2022, stabilizing above €1.8 billion in the last two years. Imports from Romania have also grown consistently since the COVID-19 pandemic, now exceeding €1 billion annually. In terms of services, the 2024 surplus mainly came from travel (€558 million), followed by construction (€60 million), insurance and pensions (€39 million), IT and communications (€38 million), transport (€20 million), and other services (€74 million).

Romania remains a top destination for Greek foreign direct investments. In 2023, Greek investments in Romania reached €3.991 billion, up from €1.181 billion in 2022. The dramatic increase was largely due to the acquisition of ENEL by Greece’s DEI S.A., completed in 2023.

Data from Romania’s National Trade Registry (ONRC) recorded 8,830 companies with Greek participation in 2024, though the number of active firms is closer to 2,000. These businesses generated a combined turnover of €5.8 billion and employ over 20,000 people. Among them, 200 companies had revenues between €1 million and €50 million, 100 companies between €500,000 and €1 million, and the remaining 1,700 companies between €10,000 and €500,000.
