The urgent meeting of the European Union foreign ministers that took place on Sunday, February 16, 2025, with the participation of Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis, has concluded. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, and was convened by High Representative  for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, with the primary focus on the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The key issue discussed during this informal meeting was the assessment of recent talks between EU officials, U.S. representatives, and Ukrainian officials.

This meeting was convened after a phone call earlier this week between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as recent announcements from Washington concerning Ukraine, according to an unnamed European official speaking to Reuters.

“The aim of the meeting was to exchange information and evaluate the latest discussions with representatives from the U.S. government and Ukraine at the Munich Security Conference,” the invitation text noted.

The meeting follows statements made by U.S. Vice President Jay D. Vance to European leaders, in which he indicated that Europe would have no role in the upcoming peace negotiations on Ukraine, which are set to begin soon in Saudi Arabia.

In a social media post, Kallas reflected on the meeting held on the sidelines of the Munich Conference, in which Gerapetritis also participated. She emphasized that “Europe remains firmly united in supporting Ukraine and strengthening our own defense capabilities. We will soon present new initiatives to move forward.”

According to reports, French President Emmanuel Macron is planning an extraordinary summit of European leaders, likely to discuss the same topic.

Meanwhile, as reported on Greek public TV ERT, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking at the Munich Conference, urged Europe to remain involved and continue participating in the peace talks on Ukraine. He also stressed that “there can be no solution for Ukraine without Ukraine.”
