Μake us preferred on Google Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with Athens Mayor Haris Doukas at the Maximos Mansion on Friday to discuss preparations for Greece’s assumption of the rotating EU Council presidency in the second half of 2027, as well as issues affecting the capital’s day-to-day life.
The meeting, attended by Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios, focused on strengthening coordination between the central government and local authorities, both to advance major infrastructure and development projects and to improve the everyday experience and quality of life of Athens residents.
Opening the meeting, Mitsotakis said the talks would address the city’s preparations ahead of Greece’s EU presidency, which begins on July 1, 2027, describing the occasion as an opportunity to “show the city at its best.”
“We will also discuss broader issues concerning the municipality, which is why we have the relevant minister with us, ranging from current matters such as cleanliness to larger development challenges,” Mitsotakis said, welcoming Doukas and expressing his readiness to work with the mayor.
Doukas stressed the importance of upgrading and modernizing key urban infrastructure. He said Athens faced a number of challenges requiring closer cooperation between the municipality and the state, adding that the city could work with the Interior Ministry to implement measures that would have an immediate impact on residents’ quality of life.

The meeting underlined the need for sustained institutional cooperation as Athens prepares to host events and activities linked to Greece’s EU presidency while continuing efforts to address the capital’s broader infrastructure and municipal needs.
