The long-expected announcement by Maria Karystianou, the best-known and most outspoken of the relatives of the Tempi rail disaster victims, came on Wednesday, coinciding with the actual commencement of a long-awaited and wide-ranging trial dealing with the deadly accident and her late daughter Marthi’s birthday.
Karystianou made the announcement via social media, linking a website of the new political party, called in short “We Begin”, and a promotional video.
The website, named xekiname.gr, includes basic information about the identity and positions of the mostly anti-establishment party.
“We begin on the first day of the month aiming to lead in action for truth and justice! From ‘I’ to ‘We’!” Karystianou states in her post, while adding: “There are moments in a country’s history when silence becomes heavier than injustice itself. In such a moment, we chose to speak. Not because it is easy, but because it is the only thing that can keep us standing and keep HOPE alive.”
“We begin, for hope,” the video concludes.
The trial in the central city of Larissa will continue on Monday.
