Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis condemned Wednesday’s incendiary attacks on the homes of three New Democracy (ND) officials in Thessaloniki, calling them a cowardly, murderous act and pledging to travel to the city in person.
Speaking Wednesday to ND members of parliament during the presentation of the government’s iKO platform, Mitsotakis addressed the attacks that targeted the residences of Zisis Ioakeimovits, president of ND’s Thessaloniki Administrative Committee; Savvas Anastasiadis, a former ND member of parliament; and Afroditi Nestora, an ND parliamentary candidate and lawyer.
“I want to express my revulsion and anger over this cowardly, murderous attack,” Mitsotakis said. “Our thoughts are with Zisis, Savvas, and especially Afroditi, whose mother is fighting for her life.”
The prime minister said he would leave for Thessaloniki right after the event to visit those injured in the attacks and to deliver what he described as a clear message of zero tolerance for any new form of terrorism. “We will find you, and we will bring you to justice,” he said, addressing those responsible.
Background
The attacks took place in the early hours of Wednesday, July 1, when unknown assailants set off three improvised incendiary devices within a span of about 17 minutes at properties linked to the three ND officials. The most serious incident, at Nestora’s residence in the Analipsi-Charilaou district, destroyed two parked cars and caused a fire that spread as high as the first floor. Nestora’s elderly mother suffered severe burns and remains intubated in intensive care in critical condition. Four other people, including Nestora herself, were treated for minor burns or smoke inhalation. Greece’s anti-terrorism unit, is handling the investigation.
