More than six decades after the death of Georgios Papanicolaou, the house where the pioneering Greek physician spent his childhood and early teenage years has reopened as a museum dedicated to his life and scientific legacy.

The Georgios N. Papanicolaou Museum officially opened in Kymi, on the island of Evia, on Friday, with President Konstantinos Tassoulas performing the inauguration ceremony. The museum occupies the family home where Papanicolaou lived until he was 14, next to the house where he was born in 1883.

The project took about three years to complete and was designed by museologist Iliana Zioga and museographer Thanasis Athanasiadis. Final agreements for the project were signed in June 2024, with most of the funding coming from the Municipality of Kymi-Aliveri with support from the Central Greece regional authority.

The museum uses the historic house to connect Papanicolaou’s early life with the scientific career that eventually made his name synonymous worldwide with cervical cancer screening.

Papanicolaou was born in Kymi on May 13, 1883, into a prominent family. His father, Nikolaos Papanicolaou, was a physician who also served as a member of parliament and mayor of Kymi. He sent his son to Athens for his secondary education and university studies.

Papanicolaou entered the University of Athens medical school at about 15 and graduated in 1904. His interests extended beyond medicine to philosophy, literature and music. He subsequently pursued biological research in Germany, studying in Jena, Freiburg and Munich before receiving his doctorate in zoology from the University of Munich in 1910.

He married Andromache Mavroyeni, known in the United States as Mary, in 1910. She became a crucial collaborator and supporter of his research throughout his career.

After a period working at the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco and serving as a military physician during the Balkan Wars, Papanicolaou emigrated to the United States in 1913. The couple initially struggled financially, taking jobs outside their professional fields before Papanicolaou secured a research position at Cornell Medical College.

At Cornell, he began systematically studying cells collected from vaginal smears. His early work focused on reproductive cycles, but he eventually recognized that abnormal cells in such samples could provide evidence of cancer.

His 1928 presentation on a new method of cancer diagnosis initially received little attention. Working with gynecologic pathologist Herbert F. Traut, he continued the research, culminating in their landmark 1943 publication on diagnosing uterine cancer through cervical smears.

The method eventually became known as the Pap smear or Pap test. It provided a relatively simple way to identify abnormal and precancerous cells before cervical cancer became advanced, transforming screening and contributing to major reductions in cervical cancer mortality.

Papanicolaou published his Atlas of Exfoliative Cytology in 1954, helping establish exfoliative cytology as a distinct field of medical research. He remained active in science after retiring from Cornell and moved to Miami in late 1961 to become director of the Papanicolaou Cancer Research Institute. He died there on Feb. 19, 1962, aged 78.

The museum presents this scientific journey across the historic house. The first floor focuses on Papanicolaou’s family, childhood, education and interests, while the second examines his research career and scientific achievements. The ground floor uses interactive exhibits to explore the continuing significance of his work.

A prominent part of the story is also devoted to Andromache, whose contribution to her husband’s research extended well beyond that of a supportive spouse. Historical accounts describe her as a long-term laboratory collaborator who repeatedly provided samples for his research. Scholarly accounts have emphasized the important role she played in the development of the Pap smear.

The museum’s opening gives Kymi a permanent institution devoted to one of its most internationally significant figures. It also returns Papanicolaou’s story to the setting where it began: the Evia town where the future scientist spent his formative years before leaving Greece and embarking on a career that would change cancer screening worldwide.
