A 36-year-old man was remanded in custody on Sunday morning in connection with a fatal explosion in Thessaloniki that killed a 38-year-old woman, who was allegedly attempting to plant an explosive device near a bank in the early hours of May 3.
The suspect, identified as Kostas Michalitsianos, had rented an Airbnb apartment on Olympiou Diamanti Street, which investigators believe served as the site where the explosive device was assembled. Authorities say the bomb detonated while the woman was handling it, resulting in her immediate death.
On Sunday morning, a public prosecutor and investigating magistrate jointly ordered Michalitsianos’ pre-trial detention following his testimony.
Facing Multiple Criminal Charges
Michalitsianos is facing a string of serious charges, including:
– Membership in a criminal organization
– Causing an explosion that endangered human life
– Possession, procurement, and manufacture of explosive materials
– Property damage
– Illegal possession of weapons
Suspect Claims Innocence
The suspect has denied any connection to the bombing or the deceased. During his deposition, he reportedly stated that he did not know the victim and was unaware of the contents of a backpack he delivered to the apartment. He claimed he was paid a small amount of money to transport the bag, insisting he had no further involvement.
The investigation remains active as authorities seek to determine whether others may have played a role in the construction or intended deployment of the explosive device.
