Archbishop Ieronymos, the primate of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece, was hospitalized as a precaution on Sunday morning after feeling unwell, according to reports.
His Beatitude Ieronymos, 87, was transferred to the Gennimatas Hospital in Athens for a series of diagnostic and laboratory tests.
A later announcement by the Archdiocese of Athens said the head of the Church of Greece will remain under medical observation for “solely precautionary reasons”.
Ieronymos has not faced serious health problems since assuming the throne of the influential Orthodox Church in Greece in February 2008, succeeding the late Archbishop Christodoulos.
Prior to his election as Archbishop by members of the Church of Greece’s Holy Synod Ieronymos served as the Metropolitan of Thebes and Livadeia.
