A municipal worker in Athens was assaulted on Tuesday morning, June 3, in an incident that prompted a strong reaction from Athens Mayor Haris Doukas.

The incident occurred around 9 a.m. outside the National Archaeological Museum, downtown Athens, when a man believed to be a drug user reportedly approached a city sanitation worker and struck him in the head with an unidentified object. The worker was not injured but was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Police were notified nearly an hour after the attack. By the time officers arrived, the object used in the assault could not be located, and neither party expressed interest in pursuing further legal action, resulting in no arrests.

Later in the day, Mayor Doukas visited the hospitalized employee to assess his condition. In a subsequent statement, he emphasized the broader implications of the incident, expressing frustration over the city’s ongoing challenges with public safety and vulnerable populations.

He stressed the need for coordinated action, underscoring that both lives and dignity are at stake, and pledged that meaningful solutions will be pursued.
