Greek police have identified two suspects in connection with a telephone scam that targeted elderly residents by posing as tax accountants, stealing cash, gold coins and valuable jewelry.
The fraud cases were uncovered following an investigation by police in the northern city of Katerini, who say a third suspect is still being sought.
Victims told to declare valuables
According to police, the suspects were part of an organized criminal group using the so-called “accountant scam” method to deceive victims.
Investigators said a caller posing as an accountant’s assistant contacted elderly residents and falsely claimed they needed to declare the money and valuables kept in their homes in order to avoid tax penalties.
Believing the story, the victims handed over their cash and valuables.
Cash, gold and jewelry stolen
The two incidents took place on May 16 and May 18, 2026, in the Pieria regional unit of northern Greece.
Police said the suspects obtained a total of €2,300 in cash, nine gold sovereign coins and jewelry valued at €21,500 from two elderly victims.
According to investigators, one of the suspects collected the money and valuables using a vehicle rented by the second suspect.
Authorities have filed charges against the two identified men, while efforts are continuing to identify and locate the third suspect, who is believed to have made the fraudulent phone calls.
Police are also investigating whether the suspects were involved in other similar telephone fraud cases targeting elderly people.
