A French family of four was safely rescued after becoming stranded during a hike in the 20-kolometer Vyros Gorge in Western Mani, southern Greece, authorities said.
The couple and their two teenage children became trapped in a remote, difficult-to-access section of the gorge near the village of Exochori after losing the marked hiking trail. Unable to find a way out despite repeated attempts, they called Greece’s emergency number, 112, to request assistance.
The emergency call was received at around 10:00 p.m. on July 5, prompting an immediate search-and-rescue operation.
Rescue teams from the Kalamata Fire Service, the Kardamyli Police Department, and the GAIA Volunteer Civil Protection Association were mobilized. Despite the darkness and the area’s rugged terrain, rescuers managed to locate the family shortly after midnight.
After confirming that all four were unharmed, rescuers escorted them safely out of the gorge.
Following the incident, the GAIA Volunteer Civil Protection Association urged visitors to exercise caution when hiking in the region. The group advised against entering gorges or mountain trails near sunset, encouraged hikers to remain on marked paths, carry appropriate equipment, and contact the emergency services immediately by calling 112 if they require assistance.
