The Union of Greek Prosecutors has called for the immediate strengthening of security measures for prosecutors, warning that those handling serious criminal cases continue to face significant risks both during and after their careers.

In a statement released on Sunday, the association said recent reports about a foiled criminal plot that may have targeted a retired prosecutor from Greece’s Supreme Court, together with previous incidents involving judicial officials, demonstrate the need for a comprehensive review of existing security arrangements.

Concerns Over Ongoing Threats

According to the association, prosecutors working on organized crime, terrorism, corruption and other major criminal cases, as well as those who have served in senior positions, remain exposed to threats that do not necessarily end when they leave office.

The statement stressed that enhanced security measures are now necessary both inside and outside court buildings through an updated and effective protection framework tailored to the responsibilities of the prosecutorial role.

Protection Linked to Judicial Independence

The Union of Greek Prosecutors argued that safeguarding prosecutors is not a personal privilege but an essential condition for ensuring they can carry out their duties independently and without interference.

It added that protecting judicial officials is fundamental to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the proper administration of justice.

The association called on the Greek state to treat the issue with the seriousness it deserves, warning that existing risks should be addressed before they lead to more serious consequences.
