Greek residents overwhelmingly chose destinations within their own country in 2025, placing Greece among the European Union’s leading countries for domestic travel, according to Eurostat.
Some 85% of all trips taken by people living in Greece were within the country, matching the shares recorded in France and Portugal. Only Romania, at 89%, and Spain, at 87%, had higher proportions of domestic trips.
At the other end of the ranking, Luxembourg recorded the lowest share of domestic travel in the EU, with just 5% of trips taken by its residents remaining within the country. Belgium followed at 29%, while Malta recorded 32%.
Europeans took 1.2 billion trips in 2025
Across the European Union, residents made approximately 1.20 billion trips for personal or professional reasons in 2025, an increase of 1.4% from 2024. This represented 17 million additional trips over the year.
Of the total, 848 million trips, or 70%, took place within travelers’ countries of residence. Another 264 million trips, accounting for 22% of the total, were to other EU member states.
Combined, domestic trips and travel to other EU countries accounted for 92% of all trips taken by EU residents in 2025.
Travel outside the EU remained limited
Only 8% of trips by EU residents were to destinations outside the bloc. Fewer than half of those trips were to countries outside Europe.
The figures highlight the continued importance of domestic destinations and travel within the EU, with Greece recording one of the highest proportions of residents choosing to vacation or travel within their own country.
