Authorities in northern Greece have announced a temporary ban on all pedestrian and vehicle access to forested areas of the Kassandra Peninsula in Halkidiki, due to heightened wildfire risk.
The decision, issued by Halkidiki Deputy Regional Governor Katerina Zografou, aims to minimize the chances of human activity triggering wildfires during a period of extreme fire danger. The restriction will be in effect from 08:00 on Sunday, July 13, until 08:00 on Monday, July 14, covering a full 24-hour period.
The ban applies specifically to areas within the Municipality of Kassandra, including:
- The Kassandra Peninsula
- The “Ridge” area, stretching from Kassandrino to Agia Paraskevi
- “Arapis”
- “Chalkovouni”, in the local district of Paliouri
This preventive measure reflects growing concerns across Greece over the increasing threat of forest fires during the summer months, exacerbated by dry weather and strong winds. While not uncommon, such access restrictions are implemented only when the wildfire risk reaches critical levels.
Authorities are urging residents and visitors to comply strictly with the ban and avoid any activity that could pose a fire hazard. Local enforcement bodies are expected to monitor the affected areas closely throughout the restriction period.
The region remains on high alert as weather conditions continue to favor fire outbreaks, and officials emphasize the importance of public cooperation in safeguarding natural areas.
