The island of Karpathos has officially been placed under a state of emergency due to worsening water shortages caused by prolonged drought conditions and growing demand during the tourist season. Local authorities sought emergency status in order to accelerate measures aimed at protecting the island’s water supply and preventing more severe disruptions in the coming months.

Like many islands in the southern Aegean, Karpathos has experienced declining water reserves as rainfall levels remain well below historical averages. Rising temperatures and increased seasonal consumption have further strained the island’s infrastructure, creating concerns about whether existing resources will be sufficient throughout the summer.

The emergency declaration allows authorities to bypass lengthy administrative procedures and move more quickly on projects designed to improve water availability. These measures may include the installation of temporary desalination units, emergency water transport, infrastructure upgrades, and other interventions intended to secure adequate supplies for residents and visitors.

Karpathos joins a growing list of Greek islands that have requested or received emergency status because of water scarcity. Across the Aegean, local governments are increasingly turning to emergency procedures as climate pressures, aging infrastructure, and expanding tourism place additional stress on already limited water resources.
