A 26-year-old man has admitted to drug use but denied responsibility for the death of a 19-year-old woman on the Greek island of Kefalonia, as investigators continue to examine conflicting accounts surrounding the incident.
The suspect, one of three individuals facing charges, appeared before an investigating magistrate and provided a detailed account of the events leading up to the woman’s death. Prosecutors have upgraded the charges to homicide by omission, alleging a failure to act that may have contributed to the fatal outcome.
Admission of drug use
In his testimony, the 26-year-old acknowledged that he had purchased and used illegal substances with the victim. He said they consumed drugs twice during the night, returning to a rented room after obtaining a second dose.
According to his account, the situation escalated in the early hours of the morning following the second use, when the young woman began to collapse.
“She lay on the bed and started having convulsions. I thought she was having a seizure,” he reportedly told investigators.
“I tried to help her”
The suspect claimed he attempted to assist the woman during what he described as a medical emergency. He said he placed his hand in her mouth to prevent her from choking, explaining that bite marks found on his fingers were caused during this effort. He has requested a forensic examination to support his statement.
He also stated that he called for help from a 22-year-old friend staying in a nearby room, and together they moved the woman outside the building.
Timeline under scrutiny
The 26-year-old insisted that emergency services were contacted in time. He said he carried the victim outside, placed her on a nearby structure and covered her with a coat while waiting for medical assistance to arrive.
However, authorities are closely examining whether there was a delay in calling for help and whether that delay played a decisive role in the woman’s death.
Ongoing investigation
A second individual, described as a friend of the victim who had accompanied her earlier that night, has also given testimony. Investigators are now comparing statements from all those involved, focusing on inconsistencies that could clarify the sequence of events.
