A major fire broke out early Saturday morning at a plastics factory in the industrial zone of Ritsona, located on the island of Evia off the east coast of mainland Greece, triggering an immediate response from the Fire Service.
Thick black smoke could be seen across the area, raising concerns among residents. The blaze erupted under unclear circumstances and swiftly engulfed the entire facility.
Firefighters rushed to the scene in large numbers. According to official reports, 26 firefighters, 10 fire engines, and one aerial ladder truck have been deployed to the site, located in the Avlida area of the Municipality of Chalkis, the capital of Evia.
Despite their extensive efforts, the fire spread with great speed due to the highly flammable materials stored inside the factory.
As a precautionary measure, Greece’s Civil Protection Service issued an emergency 112 alert to residents warning of hazardous smoke. The message read:
“Fire at a plastics factory in the Ritsona industrial zone, Regional Unit of Evia. Dangerous smoke. Stay indoors and close doors and windows. Follow instructions from authorities.”
Strong winds in the area are complicating firefighting efforts, fueling concerns about the fire’s possible expansion. So far, no injuries have been reported. Authorities are actively investigating the cause of the blaze.
