A large fire has broken out 4 km northwest of the town of Marathon in the region of East Attica, with the first respondents trying to contain the blaze, which is headed to the settlement of Grammatikos.
Aerial firefighting means were called for reinforcement as strong winds are hampering the efforts of ground units to curb the flames.
There are 40 firefighters with 12 vehicles rushing to the scene, supported from the air by five aircraft and two helicopters. Ground forces were later reinforced, bringing the total to 90 firefighters, three specialized ground teams, 20 fire engines, volunteers, and municipal water tankers.
Shortly before 3:00 p.m., the response included 120 firefighters, five forest commando teams, 30 vehicles, and aerial support from 10 aircraft and 7 helicopters.
Meanwhile, shortly after 2:00 p.m., authorities sent an emergency alert via 112 to residents in the area, urging them to remain on standby and be prepared.
Traffic police have suspended vehicle movement along two routes in the area of Ano Souli.
