Police have revoked the driver’s license of a 75-year-old man who caused a multi-vehicle crash in the south-central coastal town of Nafpaktos this week, narrowly missing a mother and her young child in an incident captured on security camera footage. The license will be forwarded to the transport ministry for a reassessment of the driver’s physical and mental fitness to operate a vehicle, authorities said.
According to police, the driver lost control of his car on Wednesday morning, crossed into the opposite lane, ignored a no-entry sign and proceeded the wrong way down a one-way street. The vehicle then struck three parked motorcycles, two parked cars, another moving vehicle, and outdoor seating and equipment belonging to two businesses before coming to a halt after crashing into the fronts of the shops.
Despite extensive damage to vehicles and commercial property, no injuries were reported. Alcohol tests conducted on both the 75-year-old driver and the driver of the second vehicle involved in the collision were negative, police said.
Authorities issued citations for violating a no-entry sign, driving the wrong way on a one-way street and entering the opposing traffic lane. The driver’s license was removed pending a review of his suitability to continue driving.
Video footage of the incident, widely circulated this week, showed a mother pulling her child to safety moments before the out-of-control vehicle crashed into a parked car nearby, avoiding what could have been a far more serious outcome. The incident reignited public discussion over road safety and driver fitness assessments after the vehicle plowed through motorcycles, parked cars and café seating in one of the town’s busiest areas.
