According to ERT, the store was completely destroyed, with only a burnt-out shell, twisted metal and sheeting left standing. Crews also had to tackle flare-ups on the upper floor, where pockets of fire remained active.
The latest reports indicate that the entire block has been cordoned off, though neighboring businesses have not been threatened so far. The Fire Service confirmed that the building also had a basement level, which was likewise completely gutted.
An eyewitness who was in the area from the very first moments described the scene to ERT: he and his companions had been driving near the port when they suddenly saw intense flames accompanied by a strong smell. Arriving at the location around 2:05 a.m., they found the fire already spreading through the entire building.
During the operation, firefighters located a man working in the basement, believed to be from the Philippines, who was found to be in good health.
