Greece is bracing for another wave of severe weather beginning Friday, with a new storm front is expected to sweep across the country, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds, according to meteorologist Thodoris Kolydas.
The western, central, and southern regions of Greece are forecast to be hardest hit, with the storm system continuing into Saturday, according to data from the National Meteorological Service (EMY).
The incoming front follows a weekend of extreme weather, including a Saharan dust storm that blanketed Crete on Sunday. Gale-force winds intensified the conditions, while other regions such as Attica and Lamia as well as the Cyclades islands experienced severe thunderstorms and flooding.
More specifically, cloud cover, local rain, and storms are expected in the eastern mainland, Evia, the Sporades, the Cyclades, Crete, the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese islands starting on Friday. Conditions are set to improve gradually from Friday afternoon in western regions. Winds will blow from northerly directions at 4-6 Beaufort, reaching 7 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea. A slight drop in temperatures is also expected.
On Saturday, unstable weather is expected to move into Evia, Thessaly, the Sporades, Central Macedonia, the Cyclades, Crete, and the Dodecanese islands, with storms continuing into the night particularly in Central Macedonia and Crete.
By Sunday, conditions are expected to ease and temperatures set to rise.
