An off-duty lifeguard in Crete prevented a tragedy on Saturday when he rescued five people from drowning at a beach in Chania.

According to reports, the group of young swimmers entered the sea despite a red flag warning and dangerous currents. Once they found themselves in distress, the lifeguard, who happened to be nearby, immediately rushed into the water and managed to pull all five to safety.

Two of the rescued individuals were transported to Chania General Hospital after swallowing large amounts of water, but doctors confirmed their lives were not in danger.

Local lifeguards in Chania have been working under intense conditions this summer. In the first days of August alone, they have already saved 83 people from drowning, highlighting the crucial role of their rapid interventions in keeping beaches safe.
