The 62-year-old woman who has been hospitalized at Tzaneio General Hospital in Athens since early June, following a botched blood transfusion, has suffered severe health complications, with organ donation being considered.

The woman is currently being treated in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), after suffering hemolysis caused by the transfusion of an incorrect blood type during her hospital stay.

According to sources, medical teams are considering the possibility of organ donation, pending the results of specific diagnostic tests required under medical protocols.

Her two sons, having been informed of the rapid decline in her condition, have reportedly expressed their willingness to proceed with organ donation if doctors determine that her condition is irreversible.

The woman had been admitted to Tzaneio Hospital for pre-operative testing in preparation for scheduled surgery. However, shortly after receiving the incorrect transfusion, she developed acute hemolysis.

Her condition deteriorated rapidly, prompting doctors to intubate her and transfer her to the ICU. She later underwent surgery after suffering cerebral hematomas.

An investigation by the Health Quality Assurance Organization has identified multiple potential factors behind the fatal error. These include among others, human error, inadequate training of medical personnel, lack of clear role definitions among nursing staff, non-compliance with medical protocols, equipment malfunctions affecting wristband identification, and staff fatigue due to excessive workload.
