A possible financial scandal has emerged within police services in Thessaloniki following the suicide of a senior officer in October 2022. The officer, who had long overseen the financial operations of the area’s security division, is linked to a missing sum now estimated at more than €750,000.

According to a case file, the deficit involves funds intended for urgent operational expenses, such as travel allowances for police staff transfers or special assignments. Investigators believe part of the money may have been diverted into cryptocurrency investments and gambling.

Senior Officers Called to Testify

Several high-ranking police officials have been summoned by the investigating magistrate. They include accounting managers from Thessaloniki police divisions who had informally allocated funds to the deceased officer to meet departmental needs, as well as a supervisory figure overseeing financial operations.

The case file, based on the findings of a financial audit, includes potential charges such as false certification and breach of duty.
